Post-graduate Diploma in Missiology

The Free Church College Library has considerable archival resources in the area of Foreign Missions and these already attract considerable research interest. We also have several members of staff with many years experience of Christian work overseas. All in all, we are well placed to capitalise on the world-wide interest in missions, not least among the younger churches.

We also want to stimulate fresh interest in our own Church's missionary programme. The time is ripe for rigorous critical interest in the lessons of the past and the challenges of the future.

This course is supervised by Professor Donald MacDonald, a former medical missionary who served for many years at Lakhnadon Hospital in Central India.

Among possible areas of research are the history of particular missions, the experience of young indigenous churches in pluralist societies, the training requirements of those involved in cross-cultural mission and the strengths and weaknesses of current missiological theories.

The programme will also provide for field studies of contemporary missionary ventures at home and abroad, as well as ethnographic studies of modern missionary culture.

Students attend lectures in this department and follow a programme of supervised reading and tutorials.  they are expected to complete two 2,000 word essays on set topics and a 20,000 word dissertation on a topic of their choice in the field of Missiology.
