Welcome PDF print email

Welcome to the Free Church College web-site.  We hope you will find it useful and informative. We train ministers - and more! Yes, we train those who will minister God's word to others; but we also offer teaching to those who might want to deepen their understanding of the Christian faith and train their Christian mind.

We believe, perhaps a trifle immodestly, that our BTh degree offers those preparing for the Christian ministry a core academic programme second to none. If you are preparing for the ministry of a denomination other than the Free Church of Scotland the College would be delighted to discuss arrangements for any additional practical requirements laid down by your church.

But our core BTh programme is not only for ministers, and we would like to make a special appeal to Christian school-leavers now considering going to university.  Why not the Free Church College? If you would like a rigorous, reverent education in Biblical Studies, Christian Theology and related disciplines, we can offer you a well-designed curriculum, excellent facilities and first-class tuition. You will be eligible for the usual funding from such bodies as the Student Award Agency for Scotland; and while the student body is relatively small in number it is very cosmopolitan in composition. Most years, in fact, Scottish students are a minority.

After three years successful study (or four, if you prefer), you will hold a degree from the University of Glasgow, one of Britain's oldest and most famous universities. That is not the most important thing, of course. Education is primarily about personal development, not about qualifications. But there is no reason why you shouldn't achieve both.

We also offer the opportunity to engage in more specialised research through our Postgraduate courses. In particular, our Master of Theology (by taught courses, or by research) is a superb opportunity to deepen your own understanding in the field that attracts your attention, especially in Scottish Church History and Theology.  It is also validated by the University of Glasgow.

And for those who can only afford a little of their precious time due to other commitments, our Part-time Courses are ideal.  You can be gently enriched biblically, practically and theologically. You can choose to attend the lectures in person at one of several venues - or from your own dekstop by distance learning.  It's up to you!

Free Church Inservice Training PDF print email

From Monday 16 January to Thursday 19 January, around a third of the church's full-time pastors and workers gathered at the Free Church College for the annual Inservice training. As well enjoying much needed fellowship with one another, they relaxed in the accommodation provided on gernerous terms at the Holyrood Hotel.  Following the very challenging opening sermon by Rev Philip Hair on the need to remain focused on prayer and the word of God, and the daily devotional messages from 1 Thessalonians by Rev John MacPherson, a variety of lectures were delivered:

  • Six elements of great preaching (Dr Ronald Boyd-Macmillan)
  • Preaching from Leviticus (Prof John L. Mackay)
  • Introducing the 'God Question' DVD Series (Iain Morris)
  • The minister as team coach (Ms Catherine Muirden)
  • Home missions (Neil Macmillan)
  • The Bible in a Globalised World (Dr David Smith)
  • Managing Church Workers (Rod Morrison)
  • Pastoring people with mental health issues (Dr George Craig)
  • Pulpit Apologetics (Rev Dr Alistair Donald)
  • Evaluating Commentaries (Rev Dr John S Ross)

Korean Kindness PDF print email

It was a privilege to welcome Pastor Chan Won Shu back to the Free Church College at the end of December.  Chan Won had been a student in the College in the late 1980s before doing his Master of Theology at New College and returning back to Seoul in South Korea to engage in an incredibly fruitful, God-honouring ministry.

He was one of many Asian students who desired to benefit from the Reformed theological teaching of the College.  Chan Won has often spoken of his debt to his friends in Scotland and has encouraged many Koreans to study at the College.

The generous donation from his congregation was a mark of his ongoing support of the College's witness and testimony.

Part-time Courses PDF print email

Over 80 students have signed up for the Part-time Courses this session so far - from all round the world.  There is still time to sign up and catch up online.  This is an ideal project for those who do not have time or finance to do the full-time courses.  It is designed to stretch your Christian mind, and deepen your understanding of God's word.  Students tend to be from an interdenominational base, some of whom meet in the various venues (Edinburgh, Stornoway, Aberdeen) and others doing it all by distance learning through online video lectures.  No particular requirements for entry - just a longing to learn more about God and the gospel!

This year, there are three modules - The Theology of the Kingdom of God (John A. MacLeod); Studies in Ezekiel (John L. Mackay); and The Christology of Mission: Unshakable Convictions in a Pluralistic World (Norman Mackay).

Free Church College Awarded Erasmus University Charter PDF print email

The Free Church College has recently been awarded an Erasmus University Charter by the Council of Europe. Like most established universities throughout the European Union, the College is now part of a scheme which facilitates the exchange of students between institutions for periods of study abroad.

Free Church College students are now entitled to funding for study at corresponding institutions in Europe such as the Theological Universities of our sister Churches in the Netherlands at Kampen and Apeldoorn, and students from Europe will be able to study here. Free Church College staff are likewise entitled to funding for teaching and study in Europe, and the College is able to host visiting scholars here.

In addition to its recognition of the College’s status in the European academic world, the Senate sees this as an opportunity to further the contribution which the College has been making to developments in Reformed theological education through its involvement in the European Council of Reformed Churches.

Please contact College Administration for further information.
